Retro (Non) Wednesday

It's been a while since we've had a proper Retro Wednesday (like 8 days...) and I couldn't wait any longer y'all. Wednesday is just too far away and the weekend is just too damn close. This is all about fun.

Remember this? I do. I used to think this song was called "Show Me Love." Silly me.

Little Dragon covered it with much aplomb. I also recommend listening to some of Little Dragon's newest album, particularly "Union Ritual." (Click here to listen + remixes!)

Retro Wednesday: 90s Cover Edition

I had an idea for a theme party. Everyone bring 3 songs from the 90s on a USB drive. Upload everyone's choices to one computer. Press play.

My choices would be:
1) Soul Decision - Faded
2) TLC - Waterfalls
3) Marcy Playground - Sex and Candy

I'm weird.

If I was the host of the party, I would cheat and add two more songs: Next - Too Close and Aaliyah - Are You That Somebody?

I think Beth Ditto would choose Aaliyah too. She's paid homage to her with a cover.

The Gossip - Are You That Somebody? (Aaliyah Cover)

There's nothing I like more than Beth Ditto's vocals and the lyrics of Aaliyah. Hot.

Thug Thursday

I had no idea what to title this post, but thanks to the lyricism of one Freddie Gibbs, I decided to dub this "Thug Thursday." Because as he says, he's straight thuggin' on this track.

The Hood Internet has covered the xx's "VCR." The xx normally conjures up pensive/depressing thoughts, but throughout the Hood's cover I feel hopeful. Funny how that works.

The Hood Internet – “VCR” featuring Freddie Gibbs, Class Actress & Ninjasonik

"Watch things on VCRs with me and talk about big love.
I think we're superstars,
you say you think we are the best thing,
but you, you just know.
You just do"

Libro de caras

Thanks to facebook, I'm kept up to date with all my "favorite music." Cut Copy is one of those "favorites." They posted this cover by Architecture in Helsinki. And talked about themselves in third person. Like this:

Cut Copy are excited to share the first of a number of quality reinterpretations of “Need You Now” about to be unleashed. Fellow Melbourne residents Architecture in Helsinki thought it would be a good idea to imagine the tune as a classic Roy Orbison record. Well, it turns out that it was a genius move. You can STREAM the track below or DOWNLOAD it for free here: http://bit.ly/hlyc6h

Retro Wednesday Remix

It's time to bring back Retro Wednesdays with this banging remix by Grum. OK, so technically it's not retro, but it is a remix of a classic song.

We Be Crushin': Lovefoxxx

Duh. I am obsessed. We (read: I) have written many posts about the gorgeous Lovefoxxx. She has her own tag on the blog. I mean, really, what's not to love? Har har.

The style.
She made her own shoe, for fuxxx's sake.

The attitude. My god, who else could pull of a one piece with a face on it?

The face. Half Japanese represent!HOLLER!

(and half pirate. maybe.)
And, of course, the distinct voice.

Kid Cover

Nothing like a brief burst of music to help you limp towards the end of your Friday. For your enjoyment, here is a cover of Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness" performed by Lissie. I know you'll love it.

Thanks Julie for showing this to me.

Simmerdown Sunday: Cover Art

Lets break down some classics for this Simmerdown Sunday.

Whitley performing Abba's Dancing Queen on Triple J's Like a Version

CocoRosie (Dan, I give you credit for this awesome find) does a beautiful cover of The Beach Boys' Surfer Girl.

Barbara covering Kid Cudi's Pursuit of Happiness....

And finally, Elizabeth and the Catapult do Leonard Cohen's Everybody Knows. (The drummer in this video looks like he wants to yawn).

I just like animals that can play the violin

This is not new, this isn't really that cool, but fuck, I like it. And our mission is to post something everyday, and we have 19 minutes left. So just watch the video and somewhat enjoy.

Goth pop, Cyndi, Ariel Pink's HG

I found this sweet gothy band called the Bubonic Plague. I don't think they're making music anymore because their lead singer is now working solo under the name Geneva Jacuzzi.

Hahaha this is effing cool though. It makes me giggle AND want to dance. Can u DIG???

For all you pop pansies who CAN'T dig:

1) Check out those dance moves
2) Just WAIT for her to rip the hat off.
3) Prince wrote this song for Cyndi and does a great version of it himself. You can hear that and a bunch of other crazy-cool songs on this lovely mix Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti made for Fact Magazine. Most interesting mix of this sort I've heard in a while. But click soon, it's only available for a couple of weeks.

First min. is new favorite T.Heads cover

This was stolen from the g-chat status of a fellow contributor, Mr. Daniel J. Hopkins, Esq. Why did he not make a post about this? I don't know the answer to that question. Truth is, I barely talk to Daniel J. Hopkins, Esq., we aren't even really friends. Sometimes I wish he was dead. But not today!

The first minute of the song is MILES (get it?) better than the rest, but the video is solidly entertaining through and through. And the rest of the song isn't bad or anything, I just think he should have made the entire song in the techno-robot rap style of the beginning instead of beating us over the head with the knowledge that it is a Talking Heads cover. We get it, Miles. We aren't stupid. You don't gotta make it so obvious.

Plus I just wanted to make a "Miles" pun.

This is a long one

Kelis covering La Roux In for the Kill.

I feel like she looks really bored. She does a good job, its really mellow and Kelis made it so I could actually understand the lyrics.

And I'm posting the original because I love it. It was La Roux's first single. Also - how crazy is their popularity these days? Bulletproof took a year to take off but now its everywhere.

Since I'm posting about La Roux. I want to mention their Coachella stint (yes, I'm writing this like a month too late). Outside the tent where you could line up and get autographs, La Roux had three people painted in gold promoting their 8pm show. It was weird. Not many other acts had promotion, just kinda expected people to show up. And people did show up for the La Roux show. The tent was packed. With screaming young people. Like the young people from LA that would just drive down for the day and do a whole bunch of drugs. They were the audience.

Anyways, Elly did a great job. I was burdened with sun stroke, my friend Jackie was throwing up, and we still enjoyed their performance. To be honest, her vocals were shaky at the beginning, but she had hit her stride by the third song. I'm Not Your Toy was my favourite. They also did a cover of the Rolling Stone's Under My Thumb. It was good. I tried to find a video, and there is one on the Tube of the Coachella performance but its painful to watch. Here is Elly rocking it at the Wonder Ballroom.

Sidenote > This is how I feel today:

And it's a beautiful Friday! Why do I always drink myself into oblivion on a Thursday night?

Everyone is posting this...

And now its my turn. Because, with no shame, I love this. And want you to enjoy this too.

Lissie, and all her genius, covering Gaga's Bad Romance

She does an amazing cover. But more importantly, she produces some fantastic tracks.

Below is In Sleep
