Rebel Yelle

It's been a while readers. But I promise it's been worth the wait. Not only are we bringing the blazing beats, but it's a very special foreign edition. And we all know all things foreign are much hotter. This especially applies to the language of love, French. And also to Yelle.

We're Basically a CSS blog

OK, so you know we like CSS. A Lot. But who cares! They are great. Lovefoxxx was recently featured on a song from the Drive soundtrack called "night call." Listen to it...NOW!

This song is so classically contemporary- its got that synth styling of the 80s, but all the darkness and foreboding of a time where the world feels like it is falling apart (basically since 2008 to now).

I love it.

Learn so much with Astro

Astro, a tropical electronic-inspired five-some, released the video for their single "Ciervos." It's a fun, upbeat soundscape in the vein of MGMT. "Ciervos" means deers in Spanish, hence why they're decked out as deers in the video.

However, this got me thinking. Chile isn't known for deers. In fact, most deers are native to North America and Europe. Hmm I said hmm.

Time for a biology/history lesson, boys and girls.

Biology
There are two types deers native to Chile -- the South Andean deer and the Pudu.

The South Andean deer is mid-sized.

While the Pudu is the smallest deer in the world.

Adorbs.

The kind featured in the video "Ciervos" is neither. What the what??

History
The deer in the video is a fallow deer. This kind of deer is European in origin, only being introduced into South America for ornamental and hunting purposes. STUPID.

Whatever. This was a lot of information.

Just listen/look at the video.

Retro (Non) Wednesday

It's been a while since we've had a proper Retro Wednesday (like 8 days...) and I couldn't wait any longer y'all. Wednesday is just too far away and the weekend is just too damn close. This is all about fun.

Remember this? I do. I used to think this song was called "Show Me Love." Silly me.

Little Dragon covered it with much aplomb. I also recommend listening to some of Little Dragon's newest album, particularly "Union Ritual." (Click here to listen + remixes!)

Am I Guilty?

Yes. I am guilty of playing this song way too much. But I can not get enough, the chorus is too much fun. Its not new, but the whole album Moment Bends is wicked good, incredibly 80's and poppy, and perfect your summer days.

8/3/11

Retro Wednesday Sample

You might recognize the sample. Or maybe you don't. It's one of those songs you've heard all your life but have no idea the name of. It's "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes. Doesn't ring a bell? Well, that doesn't matter. Feel the early-60s vibe of it in Hunx and His Punx's newest video "Lover's Lane."

Holy Mothereffing Ghost!

I saw Holy Ghost! last March when they opened for Cut Copy at 9:30 Club. At the time, Cut Copy's frontman Dan Whitford said this would be the last show that Holy Ghost! would ever be an opener for. They were destined to be headliners.

I couldn't agree more.

Holy Ghost! churns out electronic funk-inspired songs fit for even the pickiest of listeners. In their newest video, they collaborate with Michael McDonald (what the what??) and still make a beautiful (although short) go of it. Here's "Some Children" directed by lilfuchs and made for Adult Swim.

Retro Wednesday: 90s Cover Edition

I had an idea for a theme party. Everyone bring 3 songs from the 90s on a USB drive. Upload everyone's choices to one computer. Press play.

My choices would be:
1) Soul Decision - Faded
2) TLC - Waterfalls
3) Marcy Playground - Sex and Candy

I'm weird.

If I was the host of the party, I would cheat and add two more songs: Next - Too Close and Aaliyah - Are You That Somebody?

I think Beth Ditto would choose Aaliyah too. She's paid homage to her with a cover.

The Gossip - Are You That Somebody? (Aaliyah Cover)

There's nothing I like more than Beth Ditto's vocals and the lyrics of Aaliyah. Hot.

6/23/11

Unexpected Mash Ups

We at EB are a big fan of mash ups. We supported the unlikely pairing of the Black Keys and Big Boi. Lauded Brazilian DJ Joao Brasil's 365 days of Mash Ups. Even suggested that someone try to mash up Jay-Z's "Girls Girls Girls" and Pharrell's "Beautiful."

Time to make another suggestion.

I'm doing better than anybody else

Dear reader, you are in for a treat today. Considering that it is Friday, I suppose that is entirely appropriate. Today's video is from a band called TEEN from Brooklyn New York. They've managed to create the perfect montage for their haunting track "better" by using clips from some 80's bicycle dancing flick staring Kevin Bacon. Take a look, become obsessed, and then watch again.

Teen BETTER from FAR EYE on Vimeo.

I think this video/song is the perfect way to encapsulate today's 20 something culture. It takes something from the past, and by super imposing a compensatory lens (in this case, music), somehow makes it more suitable now than in the time it was originally created. A bunch of guys dancing on bicycles could only be cool in 1986 and 2011, and no time in between.

Also, who knew Kevin Bacon was so... hot.?

I got the swag and it's pumpin' out my OVARIES

"One Big Room Full of Bad Bicthes"... The White Girl Mob motto. And they bring it.... with a brand new swag.
I love Kreayshawn. I was lucky enough to see her perform this song on the fly at 330 Ritch back when I thought all she was was a Hundreds groupie with a canon camera slung around her neck. She totally blew me away. The hook on this song is fucking ridiculous. She rolls with a group of hilarious white girls from Oakland. Most of their songs are weird and catchy and make you think "What the fuck? Who does she think she is?" which is pretty fucking great.

I gotta hold down the west for EB so this is my listen up and fucking recognize that we do shit a little different out here in the bay.
With that said, you love her or you don't get her; doesn't matter. Due to the fact that the only person ever to post on EB is me, and occasionally the Rog, Glade (a delinquent EB poster) has decided that:

Is Grimes Gay?

I went to the Lykke Li show yesterday at 9:30 Club. And, boy, was it a production. Before the bizarre silk-drape-haunted-forest act that was Lykke Li, there was a one woman band named Grimes.

She was adorable. She admitted that this show was the biggest yet she's played and she was nervous. But she pulled it off admirably. If you're into lush, psychedelic trip pop laced with electronic beats and a baby voice, Grimes is for you.

Grimes - Vanessa by Arbutus Records

Also, after listening to this song and its lyrics I just have one question to ask: is Grimes gay?

I hope so.

Introducing: Mamacita

Someone once told me I should start my own Latino indie music blog. This would be all well and good, except it already exists -- Club Fonograma. It was thanks to them that I discovered this little gem of a starlette -- Mamacita.

She utilizes simple beats with a sultry voice. And she comes highly endorsed by fellow Chilean (and my personal fave and future wifey) Javiera Mena.

Check her out "en la terraza" (on the terrace). Side note: En La Terreza is a project started by some enterprising Argentines to record artists playing on terraces. All very cool.

I heard from one esteemed reader (Young Alex) that Retro Wednesday is his favorite day. That's nice. I guess you like music that's classic, none of this electro bullshit we're pushing on you. I get it.

You'll really love this one then. It features the sweet vocals of Annie Lennox AND Adele.

Thug Thursday

I had no idea what to title this post, but thanks to the lyricism of one Freddie Gibbs, I decided to dub this "Thug Thursday." Because as he says, he's straight thuggin' on this track.

The Hood Internet has covered the xx's "VCR." The xx normally conjures up pensive/depressing thoughts, but throughout the Hood's cover I feel hopeful. Funny how that works.

Trajectory of an Affair

This is a mixtape public service announcement.

This isn't about drugs. It's about emotions.

This is what an affair is like:
You're so hot. Let's get down and dirty. Oh what? You're married? Snap, girl. Let's still get down and dirty. Isn't this amazing? Illicit, hot sex. Oh what? This is wrong. Yeah, yeah it is. But we should keep wanting/hurting each other. Now we should stop. Damn that sucks. I miss you? No, I miss the sex. Well, I miss you. Now I miss you some more. Now I'm feeling better. Now I'm over it. Let's dance.

This is what it's like in song format:

You see? Affairs are all fun and games. Until they're not. So, yeah. Don't have an affair.

We have a thing for Florrie. I've said it before, but I'll say it again: there's just something so hot about a girl who plays drums guitars. They are good with their hands or something.

Also, Florrie makes fun music. It's like a girlier/less sassier version of Robyn. And who doesn't love Robyn.

Look. The Look. And More.

There was one day last week where I listened to Metronomy's "The Look" approximately 20 times. I may be over exaggerating. But, I am not exaggerating when I say that the song is good. It. will. get. stuck. in. your. head.

Hit me with that Big Gold Belt

Do you know how many kinky post titles I just tried? At least three. They all dealt with some mention of a Big Gold Belt on my bum. I promise I'm not into that. Usually.

I am, however, into this.

Commando by BigGoldBelt

It reminds me of a grittier, sexier version of Sleigh Bells. Basically the only qualm I have with it is that I wish it were longer.

If you want to know more about Big Gold Belt, check out their awesome bio:

Songs like “Wait” and “Ice Cream” sound like early Madonna – not in the lame way that lazy rock critics mistakenly think Lady Gaga sounds like early Madonna, but in the fucked-up way that Sonic Youth’s forgotten “Ciccone Youth” masterpiece sounds like early Madonna. Only Xstina’s got better legs.

Diamond Rings

UGH. Wednesday. It has to be the least fun day of the week. Naturally, you'll need something to get through the day. Hmmmmmm, if your friendly eletrobitch writer remembers correctly, the cure for hum-drum days is one part rainbow, one part dance, and one part young blond man (also known as "all parts totally gay-bones"). "Something Else" by Canada's own Diamond rings ought to do the trick.

Gotta love the lyrics to the main chorus:

I know you know just what you like
and I am really not your thing.
but just in case you change your mind
I wrote this song for you to sing.

So true. Good luck today folks!

Makeout Mondays

We have so many themed days on the blog. It's like some sort of tacky college town bar up in here. I apologize. But I think you might like this one, readers. I think you might like this one a lot.

You thought you liked Simmerdown Sundays. You thought you loved Retro Wednesdays. But you haven't met Makeout Mondays yet.

And hopefully, it will make your whole week a lot more sexy.

The EBs have come together to offer you some advice on what music to make out to. Let's start with Katie alice Greer's suggestions. This is word for word, people.

i got this heavy metal compilation recently http://www.discogs.com/Various-Satan-Is-Real/release/2259300

i think it is real gr8 music for make-outs cause it takes yr tongue victim by pleasant surprise. like, if you put on al green or the song "sexual healing", the other person is gonna be like "fuck she's trying to make out with me" but if you put on this album it takes everyone's mind off the potentially thick humidity of sexual tension in the air. maybe yall can even have a convo about heavy metal or (what is likely) your lack of knowledge regarding this musical genre. then, when you're bored of talking, boom

i'd also recommend nina simone or "world music" compilations ("would you like to listen to this bolivian mountain music record with me while we sit on my bed & talk about current films")

**Editor's note: Bold parts were totally my choice. Those are the points I busted out laughing.

Hope you like the advice, readers.

You're My Cosmic DJ

Our boy Gil-D-Beat has unveiled his newest set of skillz: dope ass remixes. He's throwing it back this time with Jamiroquai.

You can't believe how many good pictures there are of Jamiroquai on the intertubes, but I had to choose one from the infamous "Virtual Insanity" video. However, Gil's remix is of "Cosmic Girl." I'm really digging on the keyboard interlude. You should too.

Hungover.

There are just some days when you prefer to listen to something that will not make your head explode. Those are the days when you are hungover. Really hungover.

Retro Wednesday Remix

James Brown is sampled on this track. So this makes it retro, right? Right? He's the godfather of soul. And also, incidentally, perhaps, the father of Janelle Monae. You tell 'em, La Roux.

I Just Can't Get Enough

Swedish siren Lykke Li is pulling out all the stops for her upcoming album Wounded Rhymes. She's released two singles. One was the teaser "Get Some." To be honest, it didn't make me want to run to the store to get some, yaknowwhatimean. But recently released "I Follow Rivers" had me mesmerized from the first note. My infatuation deepened with The Magician's stellar remix. Here's a reminder.

Lykke Li "I Follow Rivers" The Magician Remix by TheMagician

And now, my girl has done it again. "I Follow Rivers" can stand on its own, but god does it brighten with each remix. This time, Dave Sitek takes a turn.

Introducing: Sammy Bananas

Hot Brooklyn-based DJ Sammy Bananas is gracing the DC Metro area with his presence this Friday at DC9. I expected big things when I heard resident wonder boy Gavin Holland would be introducing him, but some things are bigger than others. And I'm not talking about his bananas. I'm talking about his beats. My current favorite:

Sammy Bananas - Ladies by Sammybananas

You know I can't say no to the ladies. Or a really smooth production of old school jams meeting modern electronics.

I also always thought this approach should be taken to Jay-Z's "Girls Girls Girls" and Snoop Dogg and Pharell's "Beautiful". Just imagine it "girls, girls, girls, girls, girls I do adore/Beautifuuuuuul/girls, girls, girls, girls I do adore." OK, that's my piece.

Hope to see you kids at DC9 sooner than later.

Going Gaga for Gaga

Lady Gaga has introduced us to a remix of her new single "Scheiße." My, my Lady Gaga, are you ever multi-lingual. First it was "J'veux ton amour/et j'veux ton revenge" in "Bad Romance." Now it's "Ich bin mir absolut klar/Ich trag den Namen Monster."

One makes sense: "I want your love/I want your revenge." The other, not so much: "I am absolutely clear/I carry the name Monster." Yeah, Gaga, we get it. Little monsters etc. You're just lucky that you have a good ass beat in the background. Get it girl.

Guess what?

Beth Ditto. On the blog. Again.

Mostly because she's released the 4 songs from her debut EP. Let's listen to my favorite.

One Day Late

I am one day late for a Retro Wednesday post. But that doesn't mean the 80s are out of my head. In fact, they are stuck. Forever. Particularly this song:

She's Baaaaack

Hello boys and girls, if you've been following EB over the year(s) closely, you will know we are obsessed with a few choice individuals. And, well, we're at it again. We will have to gush over the lovely miss Beth Ditto once more because she's released a new single called "Open Heart Surgery." It's a catchy little ditty made in collaboration with Simian Mobile Disco. Take a peek below.

Mas y Mas

More and more of super DJ Barretso. Here he is again with some originals instead of mixes this time. I have to say, it really reminds me of his Futurecop! remix. I guess that's a good thing.

Barretso - Midnight Walk by BARRETSO

Barretso - We Won't Stop by BARRETSO

Barretso - Bright City Lights by BARRETSO

I also put in a request for "more disembodied voice" instead of "more cowbell." kthx.

Undefeated in the Competition of Band Names

The '96 Bulls calls to mind the glory seasons of the trifecta of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman. It also calls to mind the best band name ever -- used by two lads from Melbourne who create sick electronic remixes. Here are a few of them to enjoy:

The Wombats - Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves) ('96 Bulls Remix) by '96 Bulls

The Knocks - Dancing With The DJ ('96 Bulls Remix) by '96 Bulls

Miami Horror - I Look To You ('96 Bulls Remix) by '96 Bulls
